Pretty Girls

by Karin Slaughter
★★★★★ 5 out of 5
Mystery Thriller Crime

Karin Slaughter doesn't write crime novels. She writes crime experiences — and Pretty Girls might be her most brutal, unflinching one yet.

Thoughts

Pretty Girls follows two sisters reunited after decades apart when tragedy strikes again, forcing them to confront a dark family secret that was never fully buried. Slaughter's storytelling here is relentless. She earns every twist by grounding them in character — these feel like real people carrying real weight, not plot pieces being moved around a board.

Fair warning: this book goes to dark places. Slaughter doesn't soften the edges, and there were moments I had to put it down and breathe. But that discomfort is the point. It makes the payoff feel earned in a way a lot of thrillers don't manage.

What stuck with me most was how differently this felt from other crime novels I'd read before. There's a rawness to it that's hard to shake.

Verdict

If you have even a passing interest in crime fiction and haven't read Karin Slaughter yet, start here. Just go in prepared — this one stays with you.
